An imaginary letter from an imaginary character named Lea Cook to Atticus Finch (from To Kill a Mockingbird)
Dear Mr. Atticus,
You may not know me, I am Lea Cook. I work as an attorney in the district court of Alabama. I was born in a shack in a black settlement outside of Maycomb. The first time I saw you was in the halls of Maycomb County Court. I was just 10 then. All of us at the settlement had come to attend Mr Tom Robinson’s trial. And I saw you there in the front, next to Mr Robinson. And it was there I finally realised my purpose. Every time you said a word it awoke something in me, inspired me; it made me what I am now. And now, after my first ever trial, fighting for the freedom of a coloured person, I just want to say thank you. Thank you for making me who I am. Thank you for invoking the fire in me to help those who have none. Although we lost Mr Robinson, you helped countless others to dream, to hope, to break free from their binds and envision a world where men see more than just the color of another’s skin and see them as fellow human beings.
I hope that you too share the same dreams and wish that one day you will live in that world with us.
With love
Lea Cook
